"The Living Word"
"In the beginning was the WORD, and the WORD was with GOD and the WORD was GOD." (John 1:1)
The Apostle John begins his Gospel by making clear to the reader that Jesus is "The Living WORD." The first thing we learn from John's Gospel is Jesus is God Himself. "Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God." (Psalm 90:2) When Moses asked "who shall I say sent me", He replied out of the burning bush, tell them: "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you." (Exodus 3:14) As God, He has always existed.
It was Jesus, the second member of the Trinity (God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit) who spoke the WORD and the universe broke forth into existence. No wonder all of heaven proclaims: "Holy, Holy, Holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of His glory." (Isaiah 6:3)
Astrophysicist Hugh Ross relates in one of his books that he was once asked if he believed in "The Big Bang" theory. His reply: "Yes, and I happen to know the big banger." Jesus is the creator of all things.
We also see that Jesus is GLORIOUS! We see this in the magnificence of His creation. Who can visit Lake Tahoe during the winter season and not be mystified by the beauty of the glistening white snow capped peaks surrounding the glorious blue lake waters? Examples of such beauty are found in all the nations of the earth. Each testifying to the magnificence of the Creator! He is GLORIOUS!
Then, John tells us: "In Him was LIFE, and that LIFE was the LIGHT of Men." (John 1:4) He is the source of LIFE. As the source, all of creation receives LIFE from Him. Physics can teach us how to harness life giving energy but how are the laws of physics maintained? Who energizes the laws? It is Jesus. "The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful WORD." (Hebrews 1:3)
Finally, John tells us the best news of all... this same ONE loves us. If you are African, He loves you. If you are European, He loves you. If you are Asian, He loves you. If you are Arab, He loves you. If you are Jewish, He loves you. If you are American, He loves you. If you are an Aussie, He loves you. If you are from the Islands, He loves you. Whoever you are and where ever you are from, He loves you. "For God so loved the world, that He gave only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)
The question that has haunted my soul all of my life is "how could I ever resist His love?" This wonderful, glorious, magnificent creator of all things. God Himself who loves me. How could I resist His call to me? And why in all the world would I ever say no to His love? I cannot. I love Him.
I love the words of Peter. When Jesus asked if they (the disciples) would turn away [from Him], Peter replied "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the WORDS of eternal life". (John 6:68)
Where else can I go for Life ... for God's love ... for real joy ... and for forgiveness?
"Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his LIFE for his friends." (John 15:13) Yes, Jesus has laid down His life for you and for me. When John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward Him, he said: "Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world." (John 1:29)
So here in the WORD we learn that Jesus is the living "Lamb of God". He is the covering for all of my sins.
The truth of His washing led one writer to write this song:
Nothing But the Blood of Jesus
What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Oh, precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know.
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
It is too glorious for words. That He should love me "the chiefest of sinners" as the Apostle Paul wrote. Do you wonder if God can forgive you? Yes, He can and He loves you and is entreating you to join Him in Life... real life. Life and joy that will be sustained through all eternity.
If you long to have all your sins forgiven ... to know God's love ... to know LIFE that is the LIGHT of men, then I invite you to pray this prayer along with millions of people who have gone before and are already with Him in glory:
"Lord Jesus, I am a sinner, and I am sorry for my sin. I ask you to forgive me and wash away my sin by your precious blood. Lord, I can't save myself. I can't take away my sin, but you can. You are the Savior of the world --- the only Savior --- and I want you to be my Savior.
I ask you to forgive me and come into my life. Change me and give me a new heart. I will forever love you and follow you.
Now I thank you for hearing my prayer and saving my soul. I know you have, because you promised you would. Now I am yours, and you are mine. I will serve you the rest of my life."
(This prayer is from the book: "Once An Arafat Man"; the story of Tass Saada.)
